Miniatures

I am an avid, though amateur painter of miniatures for my gaming group. I’ve done lots of monsters, heroes, and have recently branched into more terrain and objects. I mean, really, how are we to expect our characters to take advantage of their environment and perk up combat if there isn’t anything around them. Also, I think city fights are boring without lots of innocent bystanders around filling the streets.

I do know a couple painters who really outdo me, so I hope to get permission to post some of their work here as well. At a minimum, I hope these images might inspire other GMs to enhance the tabletop experience by doing a little painting. If its helpful, I’ll explain how I did some things.

Modern/Future Terrain and Stuff

A pile of futuristic debris. This is one of the great resin pieces out there. Step one, wash gently with dishsoap and flash off any bits that don’t belong. I primed with grey (spray primer rules). Looking at the model I realized there were a lot of unrecognizable parts deep in the model. I painted them all with Reaper Miniatures Pro Paint – Gun Metal. Then I began to pick out individual objects in the pile and tried to paint them creatively. I used different metals but also realized that exposed parts would likely be painted with a flat color. It took a lot of rounds with different colors to catch every detail. Then I added some details like warning stripes on the yellow tube and lettering on the orange pipes. Lastly, I did a dirty wash to give the place a look of having been exposed to weather.

Room for Improvement: Need to figure out how to do some rust and drybrush highlights.

Another great resin piece. This was cool because you incorporate a pop can with the resin pieces to make a big liquid storage tank. (I think you’ll spot the can easily enough). Primed grey, painted with gun metal on the base, red metallic on the tank, and bright blue on the conduits. Washed again with a dirty mixture (25% Vallejo Model Color – Smoke #939, 25% Reaper Miniatures Pro Paint Black Ink Wash, 50% water). I’ll seal it with matte spray sealer now that I’ve taken the photo of it.

Room for Improvement: Painting the can red metallic and the end pieces differently makes it too easy to pick out the can. Should have been all the same. I was going to paste small prints of the Blue Sun corporate label (Serenity RPG) to put on the sides, but the glue ruined the look of the print and I abandoned that part. Dirty wash could have been better too.

Your typical 55 gallon metallic drums. Again, a resin terrain piece that could be used in a modern setting or Future one. I went with different metallic colors to add some variety and realism to the piece.

Room for Improvement: I’d like to figure a way to do writing or neat symbols on the sides of things like these drums.

This is one of a set of about four that I’ve painted in the same scheme. That way, I can use all four together to make an area of collapsed buildings. Aged Red Brick with some lighter color for the broken, exposed bricks.

Room for Improvement: Pretty happy with these, although a dry-brush dusting would have made them a little better.

Another resin piece of different crates. Worked with different browns on different details and the metallic. Again with a dirty wash to bring out the crevices, woodgrain, and gaps between ‘boards’ of the crates.

Room for Improvement: I’d like to improve these but I’m not sure how. Suggestions?
