Dragonlaird Gaming releases Colonel Bull’s Body – A Savage Worlds adventure

Well, folks, we’ve pulled off the hat trick! Three publications this year:

Colonel Bull’s Body is our third release and first Savage Worlds Adventure. I’ve written SW Adventures for other companies (The Curious Dr. Campbell and the Collector of Automatons for Steam Sun Games, a rewrite of Echoes of the Past for Star Anvil Games, Two Archetype adventures for Guild of Shadows by SPQR, Into the Black for Serenity by MWP, etc.) but its about time I did one for myself.

Colonel Bull’s Body started as an adventure that I ran for people at the Origins convention here in Columbus, Ohio, as well as my home table. When it got great feedback, I decided to give it some spit and polish, beef it up, and make it available for the rest of the Savage Worlds community.

The adventure is set in my Six Guns and Ghost Lands setting though it can be easily used with any other supernatural wild west setting. Strangers are brought together by the prospect of an inheritance from a famous man. There is, of course, a catch. Only those who venture into the dangerous lands west of the Mississippi and bring the dead man’s body back to his ‘friends’ can claim a share of the prize. There are dangers along the journey to the boom town of Blackwater and even more once they get there. Finding the body and bringing it back will be challenging enough on their own.

I had a lot of fun running the adventure and writing it up so I hope you give it a try.

Things are in motion here at Dragonlaird Gaming. We’re coming up on our 130th publication including columns and articles for Knights of the Dinner Table magazine, work for other products, and my own publications.

Art of Negotiation

This has finished layout and will soon be posted on DriveThruRPG.

Savage Characters Volume 1 goes SWADE!

We’re completing our conversion of the setting rules and 20 characters to be SWADE-compliant and take advantage of changes in the rules. These will go to a simple round of layout and be made available for free to everyone who has purchased a copy of Savage Characters Volume 1 at DriveThruRPG.

Adventures in the four Savage Characters settings

Once Art of Negotiation and the SWADE conversion are both finished and released, we’ll dive into the Adventures we aim to publish this year with one per setting. As a sneak preview…

Dark Ages and Dragon Gods – “Ashes to Ashes” – Our adventurers are drawn to the Greek peninsula, laid waste by the Dragon God fifty years ago…

Theta Ships and Iron Men – “Last Flight Out” – Stranded on a colony world that is about to be abandoned, can our heroes find a way off planet before its too late?

Sixguns and Ghost Lands – “Colonel Bull’s Body” – Our heroes are sent into the Weird West to recover the body of an important man with a disturbing past.

Demon Streets and Made Men – “Come and Hear the Music” – A period adventure set in 1969, our crew is sent to some hippie festival to bring back the daughter of the Don.

More to come soon!

DLG One Sheets… coming soon!

The minions in the DLG Studios have been busy at more than our Gaming the Movies column in Knight of the Dinner Table Magazine and writing adventures for other settings. We’re creating a line of Savage Worlds “One Sheet” adventures: 2-3 page quick adventures suitable for a night of play or a convention slot. The first four adventures will highlight the DLG Settings first introduced in our Savage Characters, Volume 1.

Last Flight Out – Set in the swashbuckling future of Theta Ships and Iron Men, the crew of a system ship must do everything they can to get spaceborne and reach a Theta Ship before they get stranded on the planet for the rest of their lives.

Come to the Festival – In 1969, the Woodstock Festival gathered 400,000 people together for days of music, drugs, free-thinking, and maybe just a demonic summoning the size the world has never seen. Can our ‘off-duty’ mobsters realize what is happening and put a stop to demons muscling in on their territory? Set in Demon Streets and Made Men where the only ones to stop the evil are the bad guys.

Fall of Alexandria – The Dragon God in Rome is determined to destroy the stores of knowledge in Aegyptian Alexandria. Can our heroes survive the decimation of a city to find and protect the secrets to bringing down the Dragon God? Set in Dark Ages and Dragon Gods.

On the Trail – Sometimes the hardest thing is just to get from A to B. Our posse has to get to Blackwater but first they run into a wagon trail in trouble. Set in Sixguns & Ghost Lands.

Guild of Shadows Adventures available on DriveThruRPG

I had the opportunity to write three thief-oriented adventures for Mat Greenfield’s Guild of Shadows setting for Savage Worlds all set in the setting’s main city of Kurstwahl. I’m proud to have been a part of this endeavor as I believe that Mat brings fresh blood and imagination into the classic Thieves Guild structure of a fantasy campaign setting. Bringing it to life using my favorite game system, Savage Worlds, makes the setting easy to pick up and have fun with straight away.

The Campaign Guide as well as the individual adventures and other high quality support materials are available on DriveThruRPG and I recommend that you check them out.

Savage Characters and New Projects

Greetings Dragonlaird Gaming Fans,

After the successful launch of my product line with Savage Characters Volume 1, I’ve been focusing on promoting the product and planning follow-on activities. I’d appreciate any additional buzz that can be generated or leads I can follow up with to obtain more exposure for the product. It is very high quality and great value for the price.

As follow-ups I’m working on some concepts (short fiction or adventures) in support of the four settings which got their first glimpses in SCV1.

“A Touch of Frost” – an enigmatic patron sends our heroes to the ruins of Greece in search of a key to destroying the Dragon God in Rome. (Dark Ages and Dragon Gods)

“Death Comes to Black Water” – Southern Veterans and survivors of the Civil War brave the hostile and mystical West to hunt down the Union raiders who ruined their lives. The trail leads to the boom town of Black Water which has many secrets of its own. (Ghost Lands and Sixguns)

“Loose Cannons” – New York City is going to Hell, literally. A handful of made men are trying to stop it and now they have to hunt down rogue cops attacking the Families across the city.

“Last Flight Out” – A colony planet is being abandoned. Will a free trader crew with a broken ship be left behind when the Royal Stellar Navy carrier leaves for the last time? (Theta Ships and Iron Men)

Cheers,
Jim

No Highways for Old Men

I had the chance to go back and rewatch the Mad Max movie trilogy this summer. While Road Warrior is by far the best, the Mad Max world and characters are refreshingly original and beg to be gamed.

My first step was to really do the analysis on how to run a Mad Max table top RPG and I wrote the latest Gaming the Movies column on the trilogy. The prospects of a Mad Max game really had me energized so I committed to run a pair of games based on the movies at a local convention, Con on the Cob. The games were called “No Highways for Old Men” and were run with the Savage Worlds rules system.

The games ran very well so I went a step further. I’ve written the adventure up for publication in a future issue of Knights of the Dinner Table magazine. In support of that adventure article, I am posting the eight pre-generated Mad Max game characters that were used at the convention. You may recognize some of the character photos or even character concepts. 🙂

With the pre-gens and the adventure, you’re all set to have a grimy Mad Max adventure in the wastelands of the Australian Outback. Enjoy!

Free Savage Serenity Adventure Posted

Last summer I wrote a Serenity adventure using the Savage Worlds Deluxe rule set called The Price of Success. I ran it twice for friends and now four times at the recently concluded Origins convention here in Columbus, Ohio. After making several tweaks and improvements, I’ve posted it as a free Savage Worlds Fan adventure for anyone to run.

Click to Download the Price of Success

The zip file includes a map of the city of Lost Ways on Paquin, business-card sized Object Cards, and Savage Serenity GM Screen Inserts. There are also other items useful for running this particular adventure. It is all free and distributed under the Savage Worlds Fan rules, courtesy of Pinnacle Entertainment Group. You can pick up copies of the Savage Worlds Deluxe rules and much more at their site.

Enjoy the adventure and let me know what you think.

Cheers,
Jim
